A single-herb liquid extract of dried processed root of Glycyrrhiza uralensis, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Zhi gan cao is liquorice root that has been stir-fried with honey. The sliced root is heated in a pan with a measured amount of honey until it darkens to a deep amber, takes on a faint gloss and stops being sticky, and the result is treated in Chinese practice as a distinct drug from the raw root rather than a flavoured version of it. It is sweeter, warmer and less sharply astringent than gan cao.

Glycerite: Glycyrrhiza uralensis dried processed root, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Liquorice root contains glycyrrhizin. Taken in quantity or over long periods it can raise blood pressure, make the body retain sodium and water, and lower blood potassium. Do not use if you have high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease, low potassium or liver disease, and do not combine it with diuretics, digoxin, corticosteroids or potassium-lowering medicines without medical supervision. Do not use continuously for more than 4–6 weeks. Stop use and seek advice if you develop swelling, headache, muscle weakness or an irregular heartbeat.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
